Anyone interested in Dublin’s history should make time to visit the free exhibition at the National Library of Ireland between now and 30 March 2014. It explores the history of the 1913 Lockout and the impact this industrial struggle had on the movement for Home Rule in Ireland. The exhibition includes artefacts from the Library, beautiful graphic panels designed by Tandem Design and video and multimedia elements by ourselves. In addition to the digital elements in the physical exhibit space, we also built the Library’s Dublin Lockout microsite. In terms of video content, we worked with a team of experts to create a short film entitled “A Matter of Opinion” (below), exploring the history and various perspectives on the Lockout. We also filmed five two-minute films with experts offering their perspectives on the event and its significance in Irish history and contemporary life. These interviewees were Jane Alger, Director of Dublin UNESCO City of Literature; Catriona Crowe, Senior Archivist for the National Archives of Ireland; Peter Rigney, Historian and ICTU Industrial Officer; Padraig Yeates, author of Lockout: Dublin 1913; and the street artist Maser, who has integrated Lockout imagery into some of his recent work. In addition to the videos, we put together a projection featuring press cartoons from the period and two touch screens that feature a map and information about key Lockout locations. The microsite is intended both to attract visitors to the exhibition and to serve as a permanent resource and archive. By making this material available online, the NLI can ensure that the information on this historical event remains accessible to the public.
